President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to take immediate steps to reduce the rising cost of food across the country.
Speaking during this week’s FEC meeting, the President emphasized that the government cannot allow Nigerians to continue bearing the burden of high prices for essential commodities. He mandated the committee in charge of food security to roll out urgent measures that will guarantee affordability and availability.
Key areas of focus include:
Safe transport of farm produce: The government plans to secure major food routes, ensuring farmers can move their harvests without fear of losses from insecurity or poor logistics.
Boosting soil health and productivity: A new “Farmer Soil Health Scheme” will be introduced to help farmers improve yields and reduce costs.
Strengthening cooperatives: Rural cooperatives will be reorganized to better mobilize resources, provide financing, and support farmers directly.
According to the President, the aim is not just to achieve food sufficiency but to guarantee food sovereignty — making sure Nigerians have access to food that is affordable, nutritious, and produced sustainably.
The move comes as Nigerians continue to grapple with rising inflation and escalating market prices for staples such as rice, maize, beans, and cassava. While the directive has been widely welcomed, analysts note that the real test will be in the speed and effectiveness of implementation.
The Tinubu administration has repeatedly identified food security as a cornerstone of its economic agenda, promising to ease the pressure on households and restore confidence in the agricultural sector.
