Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has sparked reactions after stating that armed groups involved in kidnappings rely on ransom payments to survive under increasing pressure from government security operations.
Speaking during an interview on AIT TV, Gumi said the groups use the money obtained from kidnappings to finance their activities and sustain what he described as their “war machines.”
According to him, the continued military pressure on the groups is one of the reasons they remain involved in banditry and kidnapping activities.
His comments have since generated widespread debate and mixed reactions online.
