The National Universities Commission (NUC) has released a new warning to the public about the growing number of fake universities operating illegally across Nigeria. According to the Commission, a total of 58 unaccredited institutions have been identified, many of which have been issuing fake degree certificates without NUC approval.
In its bulletin, the NUC advised parents, guardians, and prospective students to be extremely cautious when seeking admission into any tertiary institution. It stressed that any certificate issued by these illegal universities will not be recognized for employment, further studies, or participation in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
Some of the institutions listed include the University of Accountancy and Management Studies, Christians of Charity American University of Science and Technology in Nkpor, University of Industry in Yaba, Blacksmith University in Awka, Royal University in Ebonyi State, and United Christian University in Imo State. Others such as UNESCO University in Rivers, Saint Augustine’s University of Technology in Jos, and Columbus University UK were also mentioned among the offenders.
The NUC also revealed that eight additional institutions are currently under investigation for illegally operating degree programmes. The Commission continues to urge the public to always verify the accreditation status of any university before enrolling, which can be done easily through its official website.
Education is a lifelong investment, and choosing an unaccredited institution can have serious consequences. Students are encouraged to take this warning seriously and avoid falling victim to fake universities that promise shortcuts but deliver worthless certificates.
