A heartbreaking incident has shocked the community of Modibbo Adama University (MAU), Yola, after a newborn baby was found dead behind one of the female hostels on campus.
The discovery was made behind Block D of the Oba Hostel, where the lifeless body of the infant had already been partially mauled by stray dogs before it was found by passersby. The gruesome scene quickly drew the attention of university authorities and the police.
According to preliminary investigations, a 100-level female student, identified as Favour (surname withheld), has been linked to the incident. Reports indicate that the student had been experiencing severe abdominal pain and was given painkillers by a friend. She later claimed to have unexpectedly miscarried.
Medical professionals who examined the student confirmed that the baby was not delivered through an induced abortion, but likely due to a miscarriage. The student was reportedly bleeding heavily at the time of her arrest and was taken to a medical facility for treatment on the directive of the Adamawa State Commissioner of Police.
The police have assured the public that a thorough investigation is ongoing. They also noted that legal actions will be taken if the student is found guilty of any wrongdoing.
Speaking on the matter, the Commissioner urged students to avoid actions that could endanger their future, stressing the importance of discipline and moral responsibility. He also called on parents and guardians to continue guiding their children while in school.
The university management has not yet released an official statement on the incident.
