The Chief Magistrate Court I in Yola, Adamawa State, has ordered the remand of a local businessman, Mamuda Duma, over allegations of having an extramarital affair with a married woman and orchestrating the abortion of her three-month-old pregnancy.
The remand order followed a direct criminal complaint filed by the woman’s husband, Ahmadu Lawal, who resides in Yola town, Yola South Local Government Area.
In his complaint, Lawal accused Duma, a resident of Wurojabbe, of engaging in an ongoing affair with his wife. He told the court that he discovered the illicit relationship in August 2024 and claimed to have warned the defendant multiple times via phone, but the affair allegedly continued.
Lawal further alleged that Duma persuaded his wife to terminate her three-month pregnancy, which she eventually did. He reported the matter to the Police Headquarters in Yola for intervention.
According to the complainant, the defendant and some associates later pleaded with him to withdraw the case, assuring him that Duma would cease all contact with his wife. However, despite withdrawing the complaint, Lawal claimed Duma continued to call his wife, prompting him to record their conversations as evidence.
He accused Duma of acts amounting to "enticing a married woman" and "causing abortion"—offences contrary to Sections 315 and 203 of the Adamawa State Penal Code Law, 2018.
During the court session, the charges were read to the defendant following an application by the complainant’s counsel, Ibrahim Hamman Gurin. Duma, however, denied all the allegations. He was represented by counsel H. I. Ibrahim.
Chief Magistrate Muhammed Njidda subsequently ordered Duma's remand in prison custody and adjourned the case to September 1, 2025, for the commencement of trial.
